LIM Guan Eng has charged that the previous Barisan Nasional government had stolen goods and services tax refunds, saying there is no money in the trust account where the refunds were supposed to be deposited.
The finance minister said this is why some companies have to wait up to two years to get their refunds.
“How can the government pay when the money is not in the account?” he told the Dewan Rakyat today when winding up the debate on the Sales Tax Bill 2018.
The bill was passed today after the third reading.
Lim said the money, which was paid as an advance, had gone into a consolidated fund, and had been used by the BN administration.
“Because it was considered as revenue, it was used by the former government.”
He said he will provide details backing his claim when he tables the bill to abolish GST tomorrow.
“This is the collective responsibility of the previous BN government. GST refunds were robbed by the BN government,” he told Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau), who asked that Lim provide evidence to back his claim.
On Saturday, the finance minister said companies have to wait to receive their GST refunds as the ministry needs time to clear up the mess left behind by the BN administration. – August 7, 2018.
