THE general election to come will be the dirtiest in the nation’s history and perhaps even the world, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
The Pakatan Harapan chairman said Prime Minister Najib Razak had tactics to ensure Barisan Nasional remained in power by any means.
PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli is the Pandan MP. He was recently convicted of breaching banking laws and sentenced to 30 months in jail, which disqualifies him from running for election.
The Registrar of Societies (RoS) is also delaying registering Pakatan Harapan as a formal coalition, said Dr Mahathir, and there is high chance that Putrajaya would also not allow his party, Bersatu’s application for registration to be approved, in the hope that Najib would be able to win big in the elections.
“This shows that there is cheating. This could be the dirtiest elections in the history of Malaysia and even in the world.
“It will happen (as described), but on our side, we are prepared to face it.
Dr Mahathir said another tactic to hamper the opposition’s campaign was the delay in the registration of Bersatu with the Registrar of Societies.
He said it was likely Putrajaya would outlaw the party, which he heads, before the general election.
“This shows you that cheating is taking place. It is becoming the dirtiest election in Malaysia’s history, and maybe even in the world.
“It will happen but on our part, we are continuing preparations to face this general election,” he said, adding that the government’s tactics showed that Barisan Nasional was feeling vulnerable. – March 13, 2018.

At his prime , Dr Mahathir , while being but an ordinary umno member , took on the likes of Tunku abdul Rahman , an iconic and towering figure in Malaysian politics , and the late great lee kuan yew, who is not only the ballsiest politician and the sharpest intellect to grace Malaysian politics ever , but also one of the greatest political figure the 20th century has produced , while holding out on his own with such character and poise , that he appeared to the Malay masses , like a hero and a leader , despite his humble origins.
Now look at him. The nearer it gets to the wlection the more he sounds like he is preparing to lose. He even has his “ I lost because they cheated ” excuse out, and it is laden with hyperboles. “ The dirtiest election in the world “ he says - when you are preparing yourself to lose you tend to magnify the difficulty of your challenges, to deflect the failure you anticipate from staining your opinion about yourself.
It is as if you are readying yourself to say “ it is not me who is not good enough, the conditions that I had to face makes it impossible for any human to win.“
The opinion that dr M will be able to sway the Malay votes towards the opposition depends on his image as one of the greatest , if not the greatest champion the Malays have had in the modern times.
It was this image that persuaded the Malays to hoist dr.mahatir up high during a very challenging time in Malaysian history, when race relationship was at an all time low .
This 2018 election is going to be one of the most challenging period of Malaysian politics since then. Race relationship is again at it’s point today.
The Malays are going to want a champion to enter the fray on their behalf .
When Dr Mahathir speaks like this , does he sound like a hero and leader with an inextingushable fire in his spirit, or an old feeble man who is ready throw in the towel, provided that the defeat is not too disgraceful ?
While sounding and looking like a pale shadow of the hero and leader of his race that he once was, will he be able to away the Malay votes for the opposition ?
These are good questions to think about when one considers whether the assumption that’s Dr.M switch to the opposition will cause a huge section of the Malays to switch’s with him.
People like losers, but people follow winners. This is the cold hard truth .
