Rela officer jailed, fined RM273,000 over false claims

A KUCHING fast-track corruption court today sentenced a Rela officer, Abdul Wali Fathir Mustapha, to two months’ jail and fined him RM273,000 for making a false work claim.

Wali was found guilty by judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong for making the false claim in 2012 at the People’s Volunteer Corp headquarters.

Wali, an assistant officer in the district of Serian was found guilty of attempting to mislead Rela accounts clerk Jamil Aboi by claiming RM54,720 as wages for Rela personnel for the month of April in 2012.

He claimed there were 190 personnel on election duty when no one was on duty.

He was charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

In an unrelated case, a police inspector was jailed 22 days after pleading guilty to soliciting RM5,000 from a woman in return for returning her seized jewellery three years ago.

Azrul Izman Shazam, then with the narcotics division at the Sibu police headquarters, was also fined RM25,000.

Azrul, 35, pleaded guilty before Kumbong to the charge that he on March 13, 2015, solicited the bribe from Amy Yip Su Ling in a room at RH Hotel. – January 11, 2018.
