THE Julau and Tebrau MPs, both from PKR, have signed statutory declarations (SDs) in support of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Larry Sng and Steven Choong Shiau Yoon both handed their SDs to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today.

“Today I received the SDs from two Opposition MPs who now support the PN government.

“With their support, this will strengthen the PN government’s efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and restore the economy,” Muhyiddin said in a Facebook post.

PKR central committee member, G.Manivannan confirmed that both MPs have quit their party.

“It is all about principle. We accept that they decided to join PN but we on the other hand are moving forward to a better future,” said Manivannan when contacted.

PKR vice president, Tian Chua earlier today said Sng had left his Sarawak PKR chief post yesterday. The former Batu MP was however unable to confirm if Sng has left the party.

For the record, Sng tried to quit the state post in December, saying an ethnic Dayak should lead the party in Sarawak. The PKR leadership, however, rejected the resignation.

He became Sarawak chief last year replacing Baru Bian, following Pakatan Harapan’s ouster from the federal government that saw several PKR leaders and MPs quit the party to follow Mohamed Azmin Ali who allied with Bersatu to form PN.

Baru later dropped his alliance with Azmin and joined another Sarawak opposition party.

In recent weeks, there has been speculation that a few PKR lawmakers would join PN.

Muhyiddin’s two-seat majority in Dewan Rakyat recently vanished after two Umno lawmakers withdrew their support for him.

The support thrown by Sng and Choong today would reinstate that simple majority for the prime minister.

The duo are expected to remain as independents for now before deciding on their new party. – February 28, 2021.
