KUBANG Pasu MP Amiruddin Hamzah has submitted a motion of no confidence to Parliament against Muhyiddin Yassin, adding to the growing sentiment that the prime minister has lost his majority.

Amiruddin, from Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s party Pejuang, submitted the motion yesterday to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun.

The motion follows a similar one put forward by Dr Mahathir earlier this year, which has yet to be tabled after being overtaken by the government’s bills in the order list.

“This application is to bring a motion and submit a resolution to determine whether Prime Minister Muhyiddin, as the Pagoh member of parliament, have the confidence of the Dewan Rakyat members,” Amiruddin’s letter stated.

The former deputy finance minister, who is slated as an independent MP in the house as Pejuang is yet to be registered, added his application for the motion was allowed under the standing orders section 26(1) read together with section 27(3).

Earlier this year, Dr Mahathir said his bid to table a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin was rejected twice as they were placed at the end of the order paper.

The former prime minister accused his successor of using his power as incumbent to delay the motion.

Last month, Umno’s veteran politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah sought clarification from the speaker on the status of the motion, saying that Parliament should be allowed to table the no-confidence motion as it was in line with Article 62 of the constitution.

The speaker, however, replied that Dr Mahathir’s motion was not tabled in accordance to the house’s standing orders which give precedence to government bills.

Muhyiddin’s position looks shaky following claims by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim that he has the support of the majority to form a new government.

At the same time, Muhyiddin also appeared to have lost the support of his allies in Umno.

Umno, feeling sidelined and bullied by Bersatu, is seeking a better deal in Perikatan Nasional, failing which it said it would reconsider its support for the ruling pact.

Muhyiddin is set to meet with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang by this weekend to sort out their differences.

At the same time, Tengku Razaleigh has also appeared to be working behind the scenes to form a unity government. – October 16, 2020.
