Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin says it is not practical for former PKR members to establish a new party, given the short time that the Perikatan government has left in its term. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Afif Abd Halim, July 14, 2020.

THE MPs who followed former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali out of PKR in February have no plans to form another party, said Zuraida Kamaruddin.

The former PKR vice-president, who was among the group that exited the party, said there is not enough time to set up a new entity, with only three years left before the 15th general election is held.

None of those who quit PKR has joined Bersatu, she said, quashing rumours on the matter.

“We are not yet Bersatu members. In the Dewan Rakyat, we are seated with Bersatu MPs, and we accept this as a technical arrangement.

“Our stand is with Bersatu. It’s just the approach that’s still being discussed,” she told a press conference in the Parliament building today, on the sidelines of the Dewan Rakyat sitting.

Zuraida, who retains the housing and local government portfolio under the Perikatan Nasional government, added that it is not practical to form a new party given the short time the pact has left in the current term.

Of the 11 MPs who walked out of PKR in February, all but Selangau’s Baru Bian are supporting PN.

Baru has joined local opposition outfit Parti Sarawak Bersatu and is aligned with Pakatan Harapan.

Last week, Azmin, who is a senior minister in the PN administration, denied reports that he is forming a party for his supporters who have either left PKR or been sacked following his falling out with president Anwar Ibrahim. – July 14, 2020.

  • Not forming a party and not joining Bersatu means all these 10 have nowhere to go and are now in the wilderness. If snap election were to be called soon, these partyless people will have no where to stand.
