MCA’s insistence in wanting Putrajaya to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) will see it lose Malay votes in the coming national polls, said Malay rights group Perkasa.
Perkasa deputy president Sirajuddin Salleh today reminded MCA that it won several of its seats in the 13th general election because of Malay voters.
“So be mindful or we have to ask Malay voters not to vote for MCA in the 14th general election,” Sirajuddin said, adding that the government must develop a single education system for national unity.
He said MCA, as a Barisan Nasional component party, has lost its focus and its UEC agenda is destroying efforts to build national unity.
“It is unacceptable. Is MCA not aware of the importance of unity and peace? Are they not aware of how fragile it is at present?”
UEC is a standardised test for Chinese independent high school students organised by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (UCSCAM) since 1975.
The UEC is available in three levels: Junior Middle (UEC-JML), Vocational (UEC-V), and Senior Middle (UEC-SML). Examinations for non-language subjects in the UEC-JML (except in Sabah) and UEC-V are in Chinese.
Sirajuddin said MCA, as part of the ruling coalition, should uphold and support government policies.
“Now they have become an enemy within the government. They have gotten confused. The right hand is forming a government, policies and regulations, while the left hand is doing the opposite.
“If there are any parties who support UEC, they are no different than traitors,” said Sirajuddin, adding that Perkasa’s objection was not political, but on the grounds of national unity.
Sirajuddin said the UEC, based on the education systems used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, does not reflect Malaysian culture and identity.
“Stop using 1Malaysia if MCA still wants it (UEC recognition). Leaders who love the country have to be aware that those who champion UEC are actually backstabbers. UEC should have been abolished and replaced with a single school system,” he said.
The UEC was never approved by the examination board or council.
Sirajuddin said it is against Article 69(1) of the Education Act, which states no individual or academic institution can handle or hold examination without a written approval from examination director beforehand.
“This means that UEC examination has violated Act 550 for not getting the approval of the examination director,” he said.
He said the certificates issued by independent chinese schools were illegal and the government must not acknowledge it.
MCA had lambasted Perkasa for its strong opposition to the UEC in a statement yesterday.
“Who is Perkasa to politicise and reject the UEC when politicians from both sides of the political divide can put aside their rivalry and agree on this fundamental principle that education should not be politicised?” the party’s Religious Harmony Bureau chief Ti Lian Ker had said. – November 21, 2017.
