MALAYSIA’S Internet regulator has confirmed blocking a website today over data privacy concerns as it allowed anyone to check if he or she has been hacked by just putting in a MyKad number.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief operations officer Mazlan Ismail said this was done after an application by the Data Privacy Protection Department.

“MCMC has blocked the website sayakenahack.com after receiving an application from the Data Privacy Protection Department under Section 130 of the Personal Data Protection Act,” he told The Malaysian Insight via Whatsapp without explaining in detail.

According to the Act, any disclosure of private information without the consent of users through any platform, including the internet, is an offence.

The website was intended to allow people to check if their private information had been compromised in the recent massive data leak involving 46.2 million mobile service subscribers.

Lowyat.net founder Vijandren Ramadass, however, believed that the block was due to unscrupulous individuals exploiting the service offered by the website.

Sayakenahack.com creator Keith Rozario said he uploaded the data from telecommunications companies and was considering if he should upload the data from medical companies as well.

He said he could download the data because “any geek can find it online as it’s a Google search anyway”. – November 16, 2017.
