PENGERANG MP Azalina Othman Said is the latest voice from Umno to complain about the composition of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s cabinet, saying the appointments are not proportionate to the parties in his government.

“(A) Coalition government should be based on proportional representations and not dominated by any one party, and to make it more legitimate it must have written agreement between political parties involved,” the former Umno minister tweeted.

The cabinet, which Muhyiddin announced on Monday, has 32 ministers (including himself) and 38 deputies.

Among the ministers, Umno holds nine posts, Bersatu has 11 including the prime minister’s post, PAS has three, Gabungan Parti Sarawak has four, MCA and MIC one each, and the United Sabah Party, one. Two more are appointed senators.

Umno was the mainstay in previous BN administrations, often taking the plum ministerial posts.

This time around, the party has been allocated the Ministries of Defence; Federal Territories, Energy and Natural Resources; Higher Education; Health; Foreign Affairs; Science, Technology and Innovation; National Unity; and Youth and Sports Ministry.

The former minister in the previous Barisan Nasional administration said that Umno should have been given more significant roles, such as the Home Ministry, Women and Family Development, Finance, Rural Development, and Agriculture and Agro-based Industries.

She concluded by taking a swipe at Muhyiddin, calling him “the most brilliant politician among Malay leaders in 2020”.

She ended her tweet by hashtagging it with KingmakerPN2020.

The fourth-term MP is not among the Umno leaders given a spot in Muhyiddin’s cabinet.

Other Umno leaders too criticised the composition of the cabinet.

Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor said the PN government has sidelined the voice of the Orang Asli in the peninsula.

“Just look at how many from MCA and Bersatu were appointed as senators and ministers. It seems like appointing an Orang Asli representative is a burden to them,” he said.

Sabah Umno chief and Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin said lamented the state was not represented in the cabinet.

He also slammed Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz’s statement there will not be political interference with him in the ministry.

“He does not realise that his appointment is a political one. If that is his position, it would be best that he sets up his own ministry,” said Bung. – March 11, 2020.

  • She would have kept quiet had she been appointed minister. The drama has just begun.
