THE committee of Masjid Kota Damansara wants police to act against local councils that approve beer festivals and also the advertising of such events.
The mosque caretaker Ustaz Sanusi Abdul Manaf led a protest today outside the mosque after Friday prayers and called on Muslims to protest “immoral” beer festivals as well as massage parlours and gambling centres in the municipality, which is in Selangor.
“We wholly reject all forms of festivals involving alcohol that were planned or are being planned to be held in Kota Damansara,” said Sanusi.
“We suggest that the police take action against the local council that approves any form of promotion in relation to beer festivals, whether it be signage, billboards, advertising and so forth.”
These appeals were recorded in a memorandum that the crowd of 100 protesters handed to the Kota Damansara police this afternoon.
In his memorandum, Sanusi said the beer festival should also be opposed by non-Muslims.
“This is because such vile behaviour has become a thing of celebration. It is uncivilised and unbecoming of Malaysian society,” he said.
Sanusi also criticised opposition party DAP which he said did not respect Islam.
“Islam is the official religion of the Federation. If you want to drink, drink in your house. Keep your drinking to yourself,” he said in his speech and was greeted with shouts of “Hidup Islam, hancur DAP.”
A few protesters, when asked if they were PAS members, declined to comment. Invitations to today’s protest, however, had been sent out to the media through PAS’ WhatsApp channels.
The mosque’s chief security officer Shaari Karim said there was a rising number of massage parlours and gambling centres in the area.
“It’s the development. It’s out of control. We monitor such things but we can no longer keep track of its growth,” he said.
The Selangor government is led by the federal opposition, and menteri besar Mohamed Azmin Ali from PKR recently said he would allow beer festivals in the state as long as the organisers adhered to rules set by the local councils.
Furore over beer festivals came about recently after the Better Beer Festival scheduled to be held at Publika from tomorrow was banned by Kuala Lumpur City Hall due to unspecified “sensitivities”.
Later, police said the ban was based on intelligence about a possible militant strike. – October 6, 2017.
