THE university education system should be changed to tailor to the needs of the younger generation, said Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh.

He said the ministry was engaging relevant parties to ensure the success of the education revolution 4.0.

“Our higher education system needs to be adapted in line with (progress in) technology and the student generation.

“Ideas (from the relevant parties engaged) will be taken and incorporated into the framework of the education revolution 4.0,” he said after the Pitch for Progress 2.0 competition at the Asia Pacific University in Kuala Lumpur.

The education revolution 4.0 is part of the industrial revolution 4.0 occurring worldwide, which sees the current trend of automation and data exchange, including cyber-physical systems, cloud computing and cognitive computing.

Three universities, namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and MAHSA University, dominated the Pitch for Progress 2.0 competition.

The UKM Inspire 4.0 team made a pitch for “flexspace”, a module where students can design their own courses according to their capabilities.

The USM Successors proposed a more casual “lean classroom” concept, while the MAHSA Maverics made a pitch for online trial courses to help students determine what courses suited them best.

More than 50 universities took part in the competition, and the top three winners received a cash prize of RM5,000. – Bernama, October 1, 2017.
