BARISAN Nasional has made Najib Razak the chairman of its advisory board, as the coalition seeks to regain the support it has lost.

BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the appointment is the unanimous decision of the coalition’s Supreme Council .

“The decision to make Najib Razak the advisory board chairman is unanimous. He will assist BN in its efforts to win back the people’s support,” he said.

Najib is currently on trial for criminal breach of trust, money-laundering and power abuse in connection with SRC International, formerly a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

He is also scheduled to go on trial next month for 25 charges of corruption and money laundering in connection with 1MDB, the state investment firm he established when he was prime minister.

Though many had expected his political career to end with BN’s first defeat at the general election last year, for which he was blamed by some of his party colleagues, Najib has inched his way back into Umno and BN’s good graces thanks to a successful public relations campaign, dubbed “Bossku” that has shown him to be still popular among some people, especially the rural communities and in his hometown in Pahang.

He has also maintained that he is innocent of wrongdoing even as the charges against him stack up.

The scandals surrounding him notwithstanding, the man once stigmatised for being the cause of BN’s downfall is now poised to help lead the coalition back to power. – July 9, 2019.
