10 Malaysians involved in NZ fire arrive home


THE 10 Malaysians involved in a fire at a rented house in Christchurch, New Zealand, recently have arrived home.

They arrived at klia2 at 5.27am via a special AirAsia X flight.

They were welcomed by an AirAsia X team, led by chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail.

“We are thankful to the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington and the Malaysian Tourism Office in Auckland for their help in processing the victims’ travel documents quickly,” said Benyamin.

It was reported that the fire on September 10 destroyed a wooden three-storey holiday home in Clinton Terrace, Sumner, which the Malaysians had rented.

Six of them sustained minor injuries and were treated at Christchurch Hospital.

They lost their personal belongings, including passports, in the blaze.

One of the victims, Rasol Abu Bakar, 59, said he was grateful that his family members were safe.

He said during the incident, his family had just finished their Ishak prayers.
