PAS will only be spoilers at GE14, says Dr Mahathir

PAS will only be spoilers in the 14th general election as it has never won enough seats to threaten Barisan Nasional’s dominance in Putrajaya, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad. 

“Since their formation, it has only won in Kelantan, Terengganu and maybe Kedah,” said the Pakatan Harapan chairman.

“Apart from diluting the strength of the rural people, PAS is actually not doing anything good for the country,” he said during a Facebook live session with The Malaysian Insight. 

By creating three-cornered fights, PAS will only end up prolonging BN’s rule, said the former prime minister.

The PH presidential council, however, last week ruled out cooperating with the Islamist party in GE14. It also said it is ready to face three-cornered fights in the next elections.

The PH and Bersatu chairman said as a Muslim, he found the PAS interpretation of Islam going against the teachings of Islam and has divided the Malay Muslims in the country. 

“This is not advocated by the teachings of Islam, but people become so fanatical towards the leaders and not the teachings.  

“Religion tends to bring people together, but their teachers tend to split them because of personal reasons and this is what had happened in Malaysia because PAS made use of Islam.  

“Before the advent of PAS, there was no split between the Muslims as they all belonged to the same Sunni sect.” 

DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang said PAS needs to provide political clarity and the people must be clear about the choices presented to them.  

“It (PAS) must be able to tell them what is its position and not present a confused and muddled situation as we are so near to the next general election. 

“This task of saving the nation should be borne by all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or party politics.”

Lim said that is why PH needs to reach out to the 3.5 million Umno members and one million PAS members.  

“PAS under the current president Abdul Hadi Awang is different from the PAS leadership under former leaders, Yusof Rawa, Fadzil Noor and Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who were more inclusive in approach and tolerance.

  • IT SIMPLY IS NOT POSSIBLE Hadi's PAS including Hadi Awang himself does not know they are playing spoiler. Especially the young turks that surrounds Hadi Awang. What they are up to is to proof to UMNO how much they can play spoiler FOR Najib's UMNO in order for them to extract what they want from Najib.

    MAKE NO MISTAKE - What Hadi's PAS leaders are doing is CORRUPTION AND ABUSE OF POWER - just like 1MDB and lying about unilateral conversion. ITS JUST THEOCRATIC VERSION - ALL WRAPPED UP IN RELIGION.

    After Hadi's PAS loses, it will be plain to see that UMNO will fall without Hadi's PAS playing spoiler. THEN they can extract from Najib all they want - Hudud, power and money.. ITS CORRUPTION AND ABUSE OF POWER - just like UMNO.
