Malaysia will be failed state if supremacist Isma wins, warns G25

MALAYSIA will turn into “a failed state with poverty and misery” if supremacist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) gets its way, warned G25.

G25, which comprises retired senior government officials, said Isma’s campaign for Malaysia to be recognised as an Islamic state will only split the nation.

“Malaysians of all races know that the country has a better chance of developing into a united and successful nation under the democratic constitution that we have now than a divisive constitution based on religion,” it said in a statement today.

“Our people know that the reason why several Muslim countries have become failed states is because they allowed the autocratic nature of religion to manipulate politics and interfere in personal lives. All of them have bad economies because nothing works in their system of government.”

Isma, on December 26 last year, launched a petition rejecting a secular government. It is seeking one million signatures before presenting the petition to the king in five months’ time.

The group also wants the Islamic legal system to play a bigger role.

“Malaysia is an Islamic state, based on its history, culture, constitution and Islamic principles,” said Isma in the petition.

G25 said: “Isma may well get one million signatures, but mainstream Malaysia, which represents the majority, will not subscribe to its Islamic agenda.

“An Islamic state means an autocracy where religion dictates the laws of the country, with a council of ulama having the final say on legislation that Parliament or the cabinet wishes to introduce.

“The ulama council can also veto legislation that it feels is not Islamic enough.

“Isma should make it clear whether such a system can make Malaysia a progressive country with a strong economy, raise the standard of living and assure the nation’s future.”

It said Malaysia has done well under the constitution, created by independence leaders representing the three main races and Malay rulers.

“The 1957 Merdeka constitution is democratic in character, with all the provisions of a modern country. Its basic character has not changed despite the formation of Malaysia in 1963 (when Sabah and Sarawak joined) and amendments to a few articles.

“Malaysians want the constitution to remain as our founding fathers intended it to be.

“The people will support amendments aimed at correcting past mistakes to make us a better democracy. But, we will not support amendments that will change us from a democracy to an authoritarian regime or a theocracy.” – January 2, 2019.
